Since 2008, the GoPro Mountain Games have been a summer ritual for my family
This past weekend reminded me why.
Every June, we make our way to Vail, Colorado. It’s part reunion, part pilgrimage, and part freelance assignment. I’ve been photographing the GoPro Mountain Games for nearly two decades (with just four years missed), and the energy, grit, and scenery still get me every time.
Not having the kids with us this year was different, but it was still an excellent event and well worth the 10-hour drive to get there.

The 2025 edition didn’t disappoint. From whitewater kayaks to climbing comps, the games brought together world-class athletes, dogs with Olympic-caliber focus, and fans who cheered just as hard for the kids’ races as they did for the pros.
We walked Vail Village with coffee in hand, cheered on athletes, listened to live music, made new friends, and soaked up the mountain scenery.
I hope you enjoy these photos and that they offer a glimpse into the excitement of the Mountain Games.

P.S. If you were at the games, I’d love to hear your favorite moment. Drop a comment or reply to this post. And if you weren’t, maybe I’ll see you in Vail next June.

Fantastic photos and action shots! I have been with you in past years at the Summer Games. Seeing the pictures makes me long to go again! On my calendar for next June!!😎
